Edible Cell
Our most recent project in science was when we did the edible cell. This project was fun because we worked as a group and we got to eat candy. The fun thing about working as a group was that we got to know each other more. The fun thing about eating candy was that we got to eat candy. Everyone in my group ate a lot of candy while we were making the cell so when it came to eating the cell everyone was already feeling sick of eating all that candy. We used many different candies like an airhead candy for the nucleus and we used a jellybean for the nucleolus. We also used Red Vines for the cell wall, pretzels for the cell membrane, frosting for the cytoplasm and DNA, half a Twizzler and half a Rope Nerd to make the rough and smooth E.R, we formed a rectangle out of pretzels then we filled it in with chocolate frosting for the vacuole, any type of round green candies for the chloroplast, a Dot for the lysosome, and peanuts for the mitochondria.

Strawberry DNA
We recently learned how to extract DNA from a strawberry. We worked in a group for this project too. For this project we needed dish soap, salt, rubbing alcohol, a glass of water in a glass cup, a plastic bag, a rag, and strawberries. We had to put two frozen strawberries into the plastic bag the we had to smash the strawberries. After we did that we poured about a teaspoon of dish soap into the glass of water then we poured salt, then we had to mix it. Then we poured the soapy, salted water in to the bag with the strawberries and mixed it. When we were done mixing we poured the soapy strawberry stew into the glass cup but we had to take out the chunks of strawberries out so we had to put the rag over the glass cup and squeeze the juice out then slowly poured rubbing alcohol into the strawberry stew and we waited until the DNA can up into the rubbing alcohol.

DNA Discovery
We just got done working on DNA and it was a pretty hard and long subject but the picture of the assignment on the left was pretty easy. Mr. Kirste gave us a name of a scientist that helped DNA exist. My partner and I got Erwin Chargaff and we had to learn tons of facts about him and how his discovery helped the existence of DNA. He is not known for "Chargaff's Rule", which was that adenine equals thymine and guanine equals cytosine. We had to present all the facts that we learned about Erwin Chargaff and how his discovery helped the existence of DNA on a power point from google docs.

Cow Eye Dissection
We recently just dissected a cow's eye. It was pretty disgusting and it looked and felt weird. It also smelt really bad, like chemicals and stuff. Other than those cons, it was super fun dissecting a cow's eye. I cut most the fat and irrelevant meat around the eye and I also held it with my bare hand because the gloves were so annoying and it kept getting in the way. I also cut half the the eyeball open. It was pretty hard cutting the eyeball open because there was like this layer of mussel or something that was really hard to cut plus liquid kept coming out and that made the eyeball really slippery and even harder to cut. When I finally cut it open all the jelly like liquid was stuck to the side of the eye where the lens, iris, and pupil was at. I whipped the retina so it wasn't wet then i pulled the retina skin off and looked at the back it was pretty coo and colorful then I pulled the lens out and then I pulled the iris out.

Zoo Trip
We recently just took a trip to the zoo. We went to the zoo for education because we just recently finished a project where Mr. Kirste assigned each group an animal from the zoo to work on then we had to make a presentation and present it. Now that we were done with that we went to the zoo to just look for our animal and see many other animals. I found my animal, which was the cattle egret, its a bird. We got graded on how many stations we were did and our participation. The zoo trip was pretty fun and everything but the most funniest part was my Edison docent, he did really crazy stuff and got in trouble for it. I guess the really bad thing was that I had about two or three other docents because of my original Edison docent. Those white and yellow birds in the picture on the tree are Cattle Egrets, which was my zoo animal.
